7 Last Sayings of Christ on the Cross (Day 3)

THE THIRD WORD

Art Scott Erikson

SCRIPTURE

"Jesus said to his mother: "Woman, this is your son." Then he said to the disciple: "This is your mother." (John 19:26-27)

DEVOTIONAL

This scripture always moves me deeply. Regardless of the depth of pain, agony, exhaustion, and isolation, Jesus experienced his love, care, forgiveness, and concern for others was deeper still. Jesus was being tortured and he still was actively caring for his mother and follower John.

Today, you can rest assured that he is caring for you as a follower of Jesus. Whatever level of pain, hurt, or loneliness you might be experiencing, God’s love is present and powerful enough to sustain and even comfort you.

QUESTION

Are you experiencing any hurt, fear, anger, sadness, guilt, or any other feeling today? If so are you open to God’s care for you today? (1 Peter 5:7)

PRAYER

God, I see how you truly cared for others at your own worst moments on this earth. Even while being tortured, your heart revealed the depth of your love. What a treasure you are. I need your care today. Would you care for me as you cared for your mother and your disciple John? Help me draw near to you with my needs so I may know you better and experience your care for me. Help me to be more like you and care for others even when I am in need. Amen.
