Microphone

Shure SM7B Vocal Dynamic Microphone

Vocal timbre and quality is critical to a successful podcast. If the listener is subconsciously spending energy to overcome a harsh or muddy vocal you could lose that listener. The microphone is the first and most important piece of gear in your chain. As music and podcast Producer I always make sure I have the Shure SM7B Vocal Dynamic Microphone as a part of my recording arsenal.

This sturdy microphone is up for whatever workout you deliver. It’s a great sounding mic that is forgiving for even the most dynamic voices. Due to the low output level of this mic, you will need to couple it with a preamp of some kind. The Shure SM7B comes with two windscreens options to reduce pops.

Other popular podcasts that use Shure SM7B microphones include the Joe Rogan Podcast, WTF Podcast with Marc Maron, and Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard.”

Headphones

AUDIO-TECHNICA ATH-M50X Headphones

Anthony Skinner and Pat Barrett sing at PEACE ON EARTH - A Night for Iraqi Refugees at Bethel Church in Redding California.

Headphones allow each person participating in the podcast to listen to themselves at their desired volume. I’ve been using the ATH-M50X series for years. With the padded ear cups and comfy headband these Audio-Technica’s allow me to comfortably record all day without getting fatigued.

“As the most critically acclaimed model in the M-Series line, the ATH-M50 is praised by top audio engineers and pro audio reviewers year after year. Now, the ATH-M50x professional monitor headphones feature the same coveted sonic signature, with the added feature of detachable cables. From the large aperture drivers, sound isolating earcups and robust construction, the M50x provides an unmatched experience for the most critical audio professionals.” - audio-technica.com

Audio Interface

Universal Audio Apollo FireWire Audio Interface

I use the Apollo 8 as my audio interface. I also use the onboard virtual UA “Console” mixer.

“ The Apollo 8 is the world’s most acclaimed professional recording interface for Mac and Windows, giving project and commercial studios superior A/D and D/A conversion with the tone, feel, and realtime workflow of classic analog recording.

Built upon UA’s 60-year heritage of audio craftsmanship, Apollo 8 distinguishes itself with four Unison™-enabled mic preamps, UAD-2 QUAD or DUO Core processing, and an included bundle of award-winning UAD plug-ins — which you can track through with near-zero latency, shaping sounds like a classic analog studio — without taxing your host Mac or PC.” - uaaudio

Audio Interface

Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB Audio Interface

I like the little Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and the 18i8 USB Audio Interfaces. They are super affordable, portable, and easy to use.

The 212 (pictured here) features two solid preamps and high-performance converters, allowing you to record, mix and play back audio in studio quality, anywhere.

The 18i8 features four preamps, eight balanced line inputs, for connecting synths or other line-level audio, and four balanced outputs, for monitoring and effects sends, Four monitor outs, featuring anti-thump tech and speaker switching. I also like that the 18i8 gives you two headphone jacks for separate monitor controls.

Both units allow you to get up and running quickly with the Easy Start tool and it works seamlessly with Apple.

Microphone ARM

Gator Frameworks Deluxe Desktop Mic Boom Stand

The microphone arm or boom is a must have accessory for the podcast studio. It gives you lots of flexibility, saves space that would otherwise be taken up with a floor or desk stand and is highly adjustable for all occasions.

The TYPOLOGY PODCAST studio in Nashville uses the Gator Frameworks Deluxe Desktop Mic Boom Stand (3000 series). Gator Frameworks Deluxe mic arms have full 360-degree rotation and are constructed of black powder-coated steel with an integrated 10ft XLR microphone cable hidden internally. Mounting options include a fixed base attachment used to mount to the surface of a table like Rogan’s setup or a table/desk clamp.

My on-the-go Digital Audio Recorder

Zoom H6.png

The H6 has been a great on-the-go tool for me as it is the ultimate portable recorder. The H6 features great preamps, interchangeable capsules, six discrete line-level / mic-level inputs, plus the ability to overdub and more.

Ins

The H6 offers four XLR/TRS combo jacks with dedicated pad switches and gain control for distortion-free recording.

Outs
The H6 features two 1/8” outputs, a stereo line out as well as a headphone out with dedicated volume control.

The H6’s USB port enables it to serve as a stereo or multi-channel audio interface for your computer or iPad.

Also, the Zoom H6 comes with free download licenses for Steinberg’s Cubase LE music production software and WaveLab LE audio editing software, enabling you to not only capture, but create.

When our guest come on the show the first thing they usually say is, “Wow, you look so great, how do you get that look on camera?!” It all starts with the Sony a6100 mirrorless camera. It’s perfectly-suited for podcast/streaming applications.

Featuring a 24.2MP CMOS sensor and a BIONZ X processor, capturing high-resolution stills with a broad sensitivity range and low noise is possible. The sensor and processor combination also affords UHD 4K video recording along with quick continuous shooting up to 11 fps for working with moving subjects. Also benefitting fast-paced shooting, Real-time Eye AF and subject tracking capabilities help to ensure sharp focus on a variety of subject types.

Sigma 30mm F1.4 Contemporary DC DN Lens for Sony E

The Sigma 30mm 1.4 DC DN lens is another part of making your streaming video look great! It gives you that great depth of field that is so striking.

This lens is a high performance prime with a large aperture of F1.4 designed for APS-C Mirrorless cameras including Sony E mount and Micro Four Thirds. The Contemporary line is part of Sigma Global Vision and is the perfect blend of image quality and compact size.

The large aperture is great for lowlight and for creating depth of field and its small size makes it highly portable. A stepping motor provides fast and accurate autofocus and is highly useful for video work.
